In his most recent mock draft, WalterFootball.com's Charlie Campbell believes the Redskins are going to select Notre Dame linebacker Jaylon Smith in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Could one of the 2016 NFL Draft's best prospects drop to the Redskins late in the first round?

Notre Dame linebacker Jaylon Smith is widely considered one of the best players in this year's draft class and was expected to be a top 10 pick this year before tearing the ACL and MCL in his left knee during last week's Fiesta Bowl matchup against the Ohio State Buckeyes.

In his most recent mock draft, Walter Cherepinsky of WalterFootball.com's believes the Redskins will snag the prized linebacker.

"Jaylon Smith tore up his knee, so he'll drop from the top 10 into the 20s. I think this is a good spot for him though," Cherepinsky writes. "Remember, Todd Gurley tore his ACL and still was a top-10 choice. The difference here is that Smith probably won't be ready to play until late in 2016, but he's still too talented to pass up."

Cherepinsky adds that the Redskins could be a destination for Smith with uncertainty over the team's middle linebacker situation moving forward.

Smith, a junior out of Fort Wayne, Ind., was a consensus All-American led the team in tackles (113) and passes defensed (five) while finishing with nine tackles for loss.

Twice during the 2015 season Smith set a personal best in tackles, as he tallied 14 against USC on October 17 before recording 15 against Stanford on Nov. 28.

During his three-year career with the Fighting Irish, Smith tallied more than 280 tackles with 23.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks.

A recent report stated that Smith is expected to make a full recovery from his injury after his procedure "went about as well as it possibly could have."
