Lorenzo Alexander knows the offseason always brings change, but he is hoping for some stability in his role in 2011.
Alexander transitioned to outside linebacker last season after playing defensive line – and occasionally guard, tight end and fullback – the previous three years.
"Hopefully I'll stay at outside linebacker so I can continue to get better at that," Alexander said. "I think I did all right my first year."
Alexander started 12 games last season, alternating with Andre Carter. Alexander would play primarily on running downs while Carter would come in on obvious passing downs.
Alexander finished the season with 62 tackles (a career high), 1.5 sacks, 17 QB hurries and one forced fumble.
Combined, Alexander and Carter logged 121 tackles, four sacks, 37 QB hurries and two forced fumbles.
Not bad, but the sack numbers were lacking, according to defensive coordinator Jim Haslett.
That's why it's uncertain if the Alexander-Carter rotation will return in 2011.
Haslett has indicated that he wants more of a pass-rushing presence opposite Brian Orakpo at outside linebacker.
"[Alexander and Carter] did a nice job, but you need another guy like [Orakpo] that can really turn it on and get some sacks," Haslett said.
Alexander has dropped more than 30 pounds the last two years so he could develop more as a pass rusher and also improve on special teams.
On kick coverage units last season, he posted a team-best 20 tackles and was named a second alternate to the Pro Bowl for special teams.
"I've had 300-plus players on special teams and probably 600-700 plays on defense – I've never had that many in my career," he said. "This offseason I know how to train a lot better and be a lot more productive next season."
Alexander signed a contract extension with the Redskins last year and he has quietly emerged as a team leader.
Like other Redskins, he believes the club is heading in the right direction in terms of discipline, chemistry and winning.
"I was talking to London [Fletcher] about just how much has changed here," Alexander said. "I think [coaches] are getting the right guys in here and the right mindset so we can move forward and win. That's all we really want to do is just win and I think we are on the right track to do that."
