Redskins executive vice president/general manager Bruce Allen delivered the keynote address at Langley High School's commencement ceremony on Thursday.

The ceremony for Langley High School's Class of 2011 was held at D.A.R. Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C.

"If you want to be great -- not good, if you want to be great -- it's going to take hard work," Allen told the students.

Allen discussed his commencement address with Comcast SportsNet's Kelli Johnson in an interview after the ceremony.

"It was a message that sports gives us, that the military gives -- it's about effort, it's about teamwork and it's about respecting the people who came before us," Allen said.

Allen was a student at the McLean, Va.-based high school when his father George Allen was head coach of the Redskins.

By giving a commencement address at his alma mater, Bruce Allen was following in the footsteps of his dad.

George Allen gave the commencement address for Bruce's graduating class at Langley High School in 1974.
