Archbishop Carroll High School Football Coach Honored

The Washington Redskins announced today that head football coach Rich Houchens of Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington, DC has been named Redskins High School Coach of the Week for the week of October 18, 2010.

The Redskins High School Coach of the Week program is designed to recognize and reward excellence in high school football coaching.

Coach Houchens is in his third season as head coach at Archbishop Carroll. The Lions are currently 5-2. Athletic Director George Leftwich says Houchens can be described in one word: "humble". According to Leftwich, Coach Houchens "helps counsel students, but is humble enough to cut the field and help repair areas that are in need. Rick has been instrumental in helping to change a losing culture and bring a positive attitude back to Archbishop Carroll." In addition, Houchens instills those same values in his student-athletes by encouraging them to be the best they can be and stay ambitious but always remain humble. Off the field, Houchens contributes his time to enhancing his community. He is actively involved with the local Boys and Girls Club, hosts youth football clinics and gives motivational speeches.

Each week during the 2010 high school football season, the Redskins will select one area high school head coach as the Redskins High School Coach of the Week. The selection is based on the coach's continuing commitment towards promoting youth football, developing motivated student-athletes, his overall community involvement and overall team performance and record.

Each of the coaches chosen throughout the high school season will receive a $1,000 donation from the NFL Youth Football Fund to their football program and a framed certificate signed by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Redskins Head Coach Mike Shanahan and Redskins General Manager Bruce Allen.
