Battlefield High School Football Coach Honored

The Washington Redskins announced today that head football coach Mark Cox of Battlefield High School in Haymarket, VA has been named Redskins High School Coach of the Week for the week of October 27, 2008.

The Redskins High School Coach of the Week program is designed to recognize and reward excellence in high school football coaching.

Coach Cox has been coaching football for 21 years, with this season being his fifth year as head coach at Battlefield High School.

According to Activities Director Ben Stutler, Cox "encourages his student-athletes to set high goals for themselves and makes sure to provide a support system to each of his athletes in order for them to achieve their goals. He expects his players to be leaders in school and have the right priorities in place for their everyday lives."

Off the field, Cox and his student-athletes volunteer at various charitable events including the Rainbow Center 4-H therapeutic riding program. Cox was named Cedar Run District Coach of the Year in 2007. The Bobcats are currently 8-0 and ranked No. 12 in the Washington Post Top 20, No. 6 in the AP VA State AAA poll, and No. 1 in the Cedar Run District.

Each week during the 2008 high school football season, the Redskins will select one area high school head coach as the Redskins High School Coach of the Week. The selection is based on the coach's continuing commitment towards promoting youth football, developing motivated student-athletes, his overall community involvement and overall team performance and record.

Each of the coaches chosen throughout the high school season will receive a $1,000 donation from NFL Charities to their football program and a framed certificate signed by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Redskins Head Coach Jim Zorn and NFL Director of Football Operations Gene Washington.
