Colt McCoy Returning To The Redskins In 2015

Colt McCoy is officially back with the team he led in four starts last season -- including a heart-pounding overtime victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football.

The Washington Redskins on Thursday formally announced that McCoy -- a unrestricted free agent -- had re-signed with the team.

McCoy, who spent the 2014 season with the Redskins, has played in 33 NFL games with 25 starts.

Signed by the Redskins last offseason, McCoy entered the 2014 season as the team's No. 3 quarterback but, through both injury to Robert Griffin III, inconsistencies in Kirk Cousins' game and good play on his own behalf, he would start four games.

McCoy's debut came against the Tennessee Titans. Coming in as a halftime replacement, he connected on 11-of-12 pass attempts for 128 yards -- 77 of which came on a touchdown connection with Pierre Garçon on his very first throw – to lead the Redskins to a 19-17, last-second victory.

McCoy would get his first start of the season the following week against the Cowboys, once again leading the Redskins to victory. In that game, the Texas product went 25-for-30 for 299 yards and a rushing score.

While Robert Griffin III would replace McCoy in the lineup the following week against the Minnesota Vikings, McCoy would come back to start three games for the Redskins from Week 13-15, including a 392-yard, three-touchdown performance against the Indianapolis Colts.

But the Texas product suffered a nagging neck injury and was placed on season-ending Injured Reserve following the team's Week 15 game against the New York Giants.

A look at the highlights of quarterback Colt McCoy's first season with the Washington Redskins, which included wins over the Titans and Cowboys.

McCoy had suffered the injury against the St. Louis Rams in Week 14 and was healthy enough to start the game against the Redskins' division rival, but was removed from the game late in the first quarter.

"It's frustrating, very frustrating," McCoy told reporters at the time. "I spent a lot of time with the doctors yesterday and I knew I was battling through some things with my neck and I was really trying to give it everything that I had."

As it stands now, the Redskins will once again have three quarterbacks on their roster.

But while the trio all got extensive action last season, head coach Jay Gruden announced recently that Griffin III is solidified as the "No. 1 guy" entering the 2015 season and that that he'd prefer to carrying just one additional quarterback on the roster heading into the opener.

"It's very difficult to have three with the reps that you get," he said. "You'd like to try to narrow it down to at least two. But like I said, if somebody said that, 'Hey, you have to play with this guy, this guy or that guy,' I'd be comfortable working with one. I'd like to pick one as soon as I could so we could really try to work and grind on him and develop him, but until that position is earned, you have to have a competition."
