The Washington Redskins have announced the following inactive players for today's game between the Washington Redskins and New Orleans Saints:

  • No. 8 QB Rex Grossman
  • No. 19 WR Dezmon Briscoe
  • No. 30 CB Crezdon Butler
  • No. 31 S Brandon Meriweather
  • No. 67 G Josh LeRibeus
  • No. 73 G Adam Gettis
  • No. 92 NT Chris Baker

A season ago, Grossman started 13 games for the Redskins and was re-signed as a free agent this offseason.  He was never in competition for the starting quarterback job, but appears to have lost the backup battle to rookie Kirk Cousins, who is the team's only backup today.

Briscoe was one of the final roster spots to be decided, and Butler was signed after final cuts.  Both have the opportunity to contribute this season, but will not appear today.

Nose tackle Chris Baker is the primary backup to Barry Cofield, but may have been a scheme casualty today against a throw-first offense.  Defensive end Jarvis Jenkins is capable at nose tackle and also has experience in the nickel.

The inactivation of rookie guards Josh LeRibeus and Adam Gettis offers positive reviews of the status of Kory Lichtensteiger and Chris Chester.  Both of these players are well-liked by the coaching staff, but allow the Redskins to carry more players at receiver and defensive back, which figure to factor into the outcome of this game.

Brandon Meriweather was declared out earlier this week, following a knee injury in practice.  He is backed up primarily by Reed Doughty, but could cycle with DeJon Gomes as well.
