Instrument Requirements
Woodwind / Brass Instruments:
All woodwind and brass applicants must have their own instrument.
Please be prepared to play:
- All major scales, up to and including 4 sharps/4 flats. You will be asked to play two of them, randomly selected by the judges. The scales must be performed from memory.
- A two-octave (if possible) chromatic scale.
- Either a solo, an etude, or a selection from a marching or concert band piece of your own choosing that you feel best displays your talents on your instrument.
- A short sight-reading exercise provided by the judges.
Note: We only march piccolos, clarinets, alto sax, tenor sax, trumpets, mellophones, euphoniums or baritones, trombones, and sousaphones. Other wind instruments are not part of our Marching Band.
Percussion Instruments:
- Percussionists are expected to do a mix of DCI, R&B, and Go-Go styles with a bit of original choreography.
- Must have knowledge and be able to execute The Contemporary and Standard 26 American drum rudiments, sight reading of music with time signatures of cut time, 2/4, 4/4 and 6/8, and the ability to hear and return (play) 4-8 bar rhythms.
- Optionally, you may perform a 2-3 minute prepared rudimental selection - free style and/or written. Auditions will be done on snare drum.
- All percussion applicants are expected to provide their own snare drum sticks.
- Applicants who are selected for membership will be designated to a particular instrument based on vacancy and overall score.
