Gaithersburg High School Football Coach Honored

The Washington Redskins announced today that head football coach Kreg Kephart of Gaithersburg High School in Gaithersburg, MD has been named Redskins High School Coach of the Week for the week of November 8, 2010.

The Redskins High School Coach of the Week program is designed to recognize and reward excellence in high school football coaching.

Coach Kephart is in his 11th season as head coach at Gaithersburg High School. In his first year as head coach in 2000, Kephart won the Maryland State 4A Championship and was named the Maryland 4A High School Football Coach of the Year. The Trojans are currently 9-1 and seeded number 2 in the Maryland 4A Regional playoffs.

Kephart's commitment to his student-athletes success is evident in his willingness to work with student-athletes no matter what level of football experience they have had. Athletic Director Jason Woodward says "Coach Kephart and his staff do a great job of teaching first generation foreign born athletes the game of football. Unlike many high school programs in Montgomery County, Gaithersburg does not have a youth football feeder program where kids can play football growing up. About 75% of freshman that enter our school have never played organized tackle football and Kephart and his staff spend a significant amount of time teaching these young men the fundamentals of football."

Kephart supports his players' efforts off the field as well. In addition to daily mandatory study halls and weekly grade checks, Kephart works diligently to promote his student-athletes to colleges to ensure they get the best academic and athletic opportunities. Since 2000, Coach Kephart has helped over 60 student-athletes achieve their college dreams by giving them the opportunity to receive athletic or academic scholarship money. Coach Kephart also encourages his student-athletes to be positive role models in the community by encouraging them to speak with middle school students about the importance of academics and staying away from drugs. Kephart himself also speaks with students about preparing themselves for the academic challenges of high school.

Each week during the 2010 high school football season the Redskins will select one area high school head coach as the Redskins High School Coach of the Week. The selection is based on the coach's continuing commitment towards promoting youth football, developing motivated student-athletes, his overall community involvement and overall team performance and record.

Each of the coaches chosen throughout the high school season will receive a $1,000 donation from the NFL Youth Football Fund to their football program and a framed certificate signed by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Redskins Head Coach Mike Shanahan and Redskins General Manager Bruce Allen.
