Legendary Redskins head coach George Allen was posthumously inducted into the St. Clair Shores [Mich.] Athletics Hall of Fame over the weekend.
Allen earned varsity letters in football, track and basketball while Lake Shore High School, before graduating in 1937.
His high school had already honored him a few years ago as part of the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Hometown Hall of Famers program. At the time, Allen's son, former Virginia Governor and U.S. Senator, George Allen Jr., represented his father at the ceremony.
"We take great pride in calling Allen] one of our own,” [said Lake Shore principal Joe DiPonio at the time. "This is why we're here … It's about our school, our students, past and present, and our community."
Over the weekend, a nine-member committee considered 50 some nominees and came up with eight teams or individuals for the first class, which also included Mark Wells, a member of the 1980 Olympic hockey team.
Allen's credentials, of course, extend beyond his time in high school.
He began his coaching career with the Rams and then migrated to the Redskins in 1971, where he took over personnel decisions and turned the team into a perennial winner, eventually taking the 1972 team to face the Dolphins in Super Bowl VII. He finished coaching in Washington in 1977.
Allen was named chairman of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports in 1981. Later, he was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 1998 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2002, 12 years after passing away.
It would have been fitting if someone at the ceremony gave out a "Hip Hip, Hooray!"
