Head coach Mike Shanahan reported that Robert Griffin III is seeking a second opinion on an MRI that created more questions than answers.
"Right now, I really don't know. Everything right now is total speculation," Shanahan said. "There is a concern. They want to take another look and have a physical exam with him to make sure they're not looking at old injuries."
Griffin III tore his right ACL in 2009 while playing collegiately at Baylor University, missing the remainder of the season. He suffered a Grade 1 sprain of his right LCL earlier this season.
He did not address the media today after learning the results of the test, but Griffin III said after the game that he first felt weakness in his right knee during the second drive of the game.
"My knee kind of buckled on me and scared me a little bit, so I went to the sideline and got a tape job done on the knee," he said. "I didn't get hit. I just planted on it wrong."
Shanahan told the media after the game that he checked on Griffin III's status throughout the game, but he assured his coach that he was hurting and not injured.
In the fourth quarter, Griffin III went after a botched snap and felt his knee collapse under the strain. He fell to the turf and was attended to by the team's medical staff.
"The only time I couldn't play was when I went down. I took myself out of the game," Griffin III said. "That's just the way you have to play. I'm the best option for this team, and that's why I'm the starter."
Griffin III threw for 68 yards on the first two drives, but managed just 16 more yards through the air after tweaking his knee.
Despite the numbers to the contrary, Griffin III rejected the assertion that the injury affected his ability to plant and throw the football.
"No, the knee did not affect me trying to throw," he said. "The interception, I underthrew Pierre [Garçon] on that one. Sometimes you underthrow a guy here and there. [That was] just an unfortunate underthrow."
After the game, Griffin III said he was unsure of the nature or degree of his injury, but would wait for the test results to show.
"Honestly, it's up in the air for me right now," he said. "I know coming off the field I thought it was just the same thing (LCL injury).
"Right now, we'll see what it is."
Griffin III said that both he and the coaching staff understood the risk of playing through the pain, but that there is an inherent risk to playing the game.
"I think I did put myself at more risk by being out there. But every time you step on the football field in between those lines you're putting your life, your career [and] every single ligament in your body in jeopardy," Griffin III said. "That's just the approach I had to take toward it. My teammates needed me out there, so I was out there for them.
"When it comes to the impact of the injury, I'm not sure what it is. We'll figure that out here in the next few days. Whatever it is, I'll make sure I come back healthy from it."
