Joe Gibbs Post-Game Press Conference

Opening comments:

"From a Redskins standpoint, I'm always cautious to say too much until I look at the film, but you couldn't find many positives. I'd have to say that my hat's off to the Bengals. I thought they did a terrific job. I think we'll have to get in and look at the film. I think it's very obvious to everybody that we had a lot of real negatives for us. I'm sure everybody's interested in Clinton (Portis). I think he's got a really sore shoulder. We'll have everybody take a look at it tomorrow, and we'll just kind of see what we have there. That was certainly a disappointing set of circumstances. But I'd say, for us, it's really kind of hard to find a positive."

On if it seemed like everything went down hill after the first few offensive plays:

"Like I said, I'm sure there's going to be some good things in there. But it's hard to find them when you wind up playing a game like that and looking like that. So I think it's something that we need to get in tomorrow and take a long, hard look at the film and try to do the best evaluation we can. I think it's obvious to everybody; we've got a long way to go. We've got some real serious work we're going to have to do."

On if he things he is going to shut down Portis for the remainder of the preseason:

"I don't know. I would say it's probably going to be something that's really sore, and I think right now it's probably a tough time to say. Now, obviously, it's going to be a while before he can play. I don't know how long that's going to be. We'll hope for the best there."

On Portis's comment about getting hurt in a game he had no business playing in:

"I'm sure he's frustrated right now. That would be a frustration for somebody. It's preseason. I think what we had scheduled (for the starters). We just wanted to have one good drive. I didn't want him to carry the ball more than a couple of times. He carried it once. I think it was probably on me, if there's going to be anybody second guessed on it."

On whether RB Ladell Betts was held out as a precaution:

"He didn't feel good. He just didn't feel comfortable. I talked to him last night and he said, Hey, I haven't really tested it.' So when somebody tells you something like that, I kind of felt like the best thing to do was to keep him out."

On if he was surprised that Portis was in on the tackle after the interception by Bengals CB Keiwan Ratliff:

"No. He plays so well without the ball in his hands. That's one of the things he does. He plays extremely tough. No, it didn't surprise me. I think he's the kind of guy that's going to give everything he's got."

On his impressions of the first-team defense:

"First-team defense? I'm sure we're going to see some good things there, and I'm sure we're going to see some good things offensively. When you (look at it) individually there, there's probably some good things with our offense. It's just you get discouraged when you make some of the plays you made today and play the way we did."
