The Iowa Hawkeyes have a recurring feature on their website called “Where Are They Now?” featuring profiles of former players that explores their lives after football.

Thursday, the focus was on longtime Redskins running back Ladell Betts, who played for Iowa for four years before a fruitful eight-year career in Washington.

Betts tallied 3,176 rushing yards with the Redskins to accompany 13 touchdowns and his 3,686 rushing yards is second-most in Iowa history.

Now 35, he operates a property management business in South Florida and owns three multi-unit properties.

"I get a great deal of enjoyment out of providing a tenant with a quality place to live," he said. "It's a great feeling when you see a family get excited about the property you have for them."

Betts was fascinated by HGTV shows that rehabbed and sold properties and had always wanted to get into real estate after his football career. He's hoping to add one or two properties each year.

He also makes sure he has plenty of time for family, too.

Now parenting four kids, with ages ranging from six months to 12 years, he is able to work from home and spend more time with them than he did in the NFL.

"I just love being a dad. Period," he said. "I'm crazy about my kids. I enjoy every moment with them, because so many years of my life were centered around football."

But Betts still remains active in the sport.

He is the offensive coordinator for a prep football team at Boca Raton High School but knows coaching at higher levels will put him in the same position as before, with little time to spend with family.

"College and pro coaches put in so many hours," he said. "I couldn't imagine being away from my kids for that much time. My goal to be the best father I can be, and be around my kids as much as possible. I try to keep things simple and not try anything too crazy. I'm blessed with a great life."
