Landry Uncertain For Season Opener

Safety LaRon Landry's availability for the Redskins' regular season opener against the New York Giants is uncertain.

Landry continues to rehab a pulled hamstring that he suffered while rehabbing his Achilles heel injury. He has yet to play in the preseason and he is not expected to play in the preseason finale this Thursday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at FedExField.

Landry is eager to return to action, but he does not want to rush his recovery. He does not want to risk further injury and miss significant regular season action.

"I just take it day by day," he said. "I'm not trying to compete with myself. Whenever it heals, it's going to heal. Mentally you are kind of nervous that it's going to tweak again but that's what all the rehab is for."

There have been questions about how the chemistry in the secondary will unfold to start the season. Cornerback Josh Wilson and safety Oshiomogho Atogwe, both new free agent acquisitions, have also been slowed by injuries this preseason.

Head coach Mike Shanahan is equally as uncertain with a timetable for Landry's return.

"We evaluate it every day and what he can do on the field," Shanahan said. "He was looking pretty good getting in football shape before he pulled that hamstring, or tweaked it.

"I'll have to get a chance to see what types of football shape he is in, and [have him] get some reps obviously with our defense. There are a lot of evaluations to do before we can say he is ready to play."

While Landry may not be able to play against the Giants, he feels that he is close to returning. When asked if he felt he could start the season on the Physically Unable To Perform list, Landry was certain it would be out of the question.

"Don't even ask me that. Definitely not. Not going to happen," he said.
