Redskins assistant head coach-running backs Stump Mitchell is moving on.

Mitchell has accepted the head coaching job at Southern University.

Mitchell coached the Redskins' running backs under Jim Zorn the last two seasons.

In 2008, he oversaw one of Clinton Portis's finest seasons. Portis rushed for 1,487 yards on 342 carries and scored nine touchdowns that year.

Portis's 2009 campaign was cut short after he suffered a concussion in Week 9. He tallied 494 yards and one touchdown on 124 carries.

Prior to joining the Redskins, Mitchell spent nine seasons coaching running backs for the Seattle Seahawks.

Mitchell was previously head coach at Morgan State.
