A pairing the Redskins hope create a strong right side of the line for years to come, Morgan Moses and Brandon Scherff saw their first game action together Thursday night.

The familiar faces were there for the Redskins' first team offense on Thursday night against the Browns, but two new faces in the starting lineup were there too: rookie guard Brandon Scherff and second-year tackle Morgan Moses.

The two young offensive linemen had been working side-by-side in training camp practices over the last week including joint sessions with the Texans, but the preseason opener marked the first test for the duo as the right side of the offensive line.

"It felt good. That's what you come here to do," Scherff said of getting game action. "It's a dream come true for me. Just to be out there with the five guys up front, it's a dream come true. But we got a lot of work to do."

The first-team offense was on the field for two drives, registering four first downs with a total of 85 yards.

Running back Alfred Morris ran the ball eight times for 42 yards, while quarterback Robert Griffin III connected on four of his pass attempts for 36 yards.

Griffin III nearly linked up with Pierre Garçon for a fifth completion on what possibly could have been a 60-plus-yard touchdown in which the quarterback had a clean pocket to look downfield.

"Coach calls a play for a reason and Robert made a great throw," Scherff said of the play. "We just need to get back on it. It's only a preseason game, but when that time comes, we need to make those plays up front."

Still, Moses saw some things out of the offense that he's hoping they'll take with them moving forward.

"I think we did well," Moses said. "We were able to move the ball, get a couple of first downs, and we were able to gel. We came out and competed like coach asked. I feel like we played at a good level. "

Morris' first carry of the game, meanwhile, was for no gain before he started getting into sync on the rest of the plays in which he number was called.

Scherff said the Redskins' plan was to run the ball early, a possible indication of what they'll also look to do once the regular season starts.

"We just tried to come out, run the football," Scherff said. "We have to correct some stuff. For me, it's the fundamentals and taking what [offensive line coach Bill] Callahan teaches us during practice and taking it out on the game field.  It was our first game, so we have a long way to go."

As the days and weeks advance, Moses and Scherff will continue to learn each other's' tendencies and grow an identity together.

"Ever since we've been paired together, he and I have been talking about me and him are two young players on the right side," Moses said. "I told him, 'Hey, I might not know everything, but I'll share the things I do know. And as long as we're communicating on the same page, everything will be fine.'"
