Like most gifted athletes, linebacker Mason Foster, just signed to the Redskins roster, played more than one position as he grew up around football.
As a leader on defense for the University of Washington, he was prepared to know the ins and outs of a playbook and guide his team thanks to his experience playing quarterback for Seaside High School in California.
Halfway through his senior season, he took over the quarterbacking job to lead his Spartans to the Monterey Bay League title and the CIF Central Coast Section small school championship in 2006.
"I feel like I would have been a really good quarterback [in college]. I'd like to think so," Foster said on an segment of "First Take" before being drafted. "It was a great time playing quarterback. It was pretty much me and all my friends I grew up with in the Boys and Girls Club. I played quarterback and threw the ball then. Just throw it and they catch it. It was a good time but I really felt my calling was linebacker."
Foster led the Pac-10 in tackles per game with 8.75 in his sophomore season and finished second in the FBS in tackles with 162 as a senior. That earned him an invite to the Senior Bowl in 2011 after he took home Defensive MVP honors in the Holiday Bowl with a win against Nebraska.
He was drafted in the third round by the Buccaneers and made 343 tackles, with 26 for a loss, intercepted five passes and recorded six sacks in his four seasons at Tampa Bay.
In the same First Take segment, he also revealed some of his personality.
If he weren't playing football, he'd be playing basketball.
If he weren't playing sports, he's be a firefighter: "It's been one of my dreams since I was a little kid. I remember watching 'Rescue 911' with my mom as a little kid and it was always something I wanted to do."
His favorite movie is "Paid In Full."
His favorite music is his-hop and R&B from northern California. At the time this was filmed he liked Jay-Stylin (that may have changed by now).
His favorite food is his mother's tacos: "She makes the best tacos in the world. I would have no problem with eating that every single day."
