News & Notes: 2 Backs Near Team Marks

Two Redskins hope to etch their names in the franchise record books on Saturday night.

If running back Ladell Betts rushes for 100 yards or more against the New York Giants, it would be the sixth consecutive game he would have eclipsed the 100-yard mark. That would break the team record of five, set by Rob Goode in 1951 and Clinton Portis last year.

Also, kick returner Rock Cartwright needs 73 more yards to best Brian Mitchell's team record of 1,478 set in 1994. Cartwright has returned 58 kickoffs for 1,406 yards this season. His 100-yard kickoff return in Week 2 at Dallas remains the longest kickoff return in the NFC this season.

Betts, of course, is more focused on getting a win on Saturday against the Giants. But he admits that etching his name in the team record book would be a nice way to finish out the season.

"I think about it a little bit," he said. "Probably, the guys up front will take more pride in it than I will. But at the same time, I'm more focused on getting a 'W.' If we get a win, I think the rest will take care of itself."

Added left guard Derrick Dockery: "It's a tremendous accomplishment and we take pride in getting a running back 100 yards or more. We're looking to get him another one this week."

Betts has set a remarkable pace the last five games, compiling 678 yards. For the season, he has rushed for 1,062 yards on 225 carries, an impressive 4.7 yards-per-carry. He also has four touchdowns, including two in last Sunday's 37-31 loss to the St. Louis Rams.

Betts had a costly fumble late in the loss to the Rams. He said that he has put that mistake behind him.

"We want to finish up on a strong note," he said. "We want to continue to play solid football. I think we've played well, we just haven't been consistent."

Cartwright has had limited carries at running back this season, but he has thrived as a kick returner. He is ranked 14th in the NFL with a 24.6-yard kickoff return average.

In fact, he may have carved himself a niche by excelling on special teams.

"I've always known that special teams can keep you in this league a long time," he said. "I just started becoming a regular on kickoffs this year and we've had great blocking up front all year long. It's similar to playing running back, you have to pick your holes and charge through them."

Added head coach Joe Gibbs: "When you talk about true Redskins, Rock is probably a pretty good role model for what you're looking for."

-- LAST PRACTICE

Thursday's practice session was the last of the season for the Redskins. The team will hold a walk-through practice on Friday, and then head to the team hotel near FedExField, in preparation for Saturday night's game against the New York Giants.

Although players will be back at Redskins Park for a team meeting, either on Sunday or Monday, several began the process of cleaning out their lockers.
