News & Notes: Arrington Still Questionable

LaVar Arrington remains questionable for Sunday's game in Arizona, but head coach Joe Gibbs was not optimistic that he'd have Arrington's services against the Cardinals. Arrington has missed practice all this week due to a thigh injury.

Meantime, wide receiver Santana Moss returned to practice on Friday and is listed as probable with a mild hamstring injury. It is expected that Moss will be available for Sunday's game.

Also, cornerback Walt Harris was added to the injury report on Friday with a calf injury. Harris did not practice on Friday and is listed as questionable.

Regarding Arrington, Gibbs said: "LaVar probably won't play--that's my guess right now."

Arrington told reporters on Friday that he still hoped to play against the Cardinals. He said he initially suffered the injury in the Oakland game and re-aggravated it last Sunday in St. Louis.

"I want to be out there, but I want to be effective," he said. "I just hope I can get through [the injury]. If I have to buy some time to get back out there, that's what I'll do."

If Arrington does not play on Sunday, linebacker Warrick Holdman would likely see increased playing time. Linebacker Chris Clemons, who has excelled as a third-down pass specialist, could also see increased playing time.

The Cardinals have the NFL's top-ranked passing offense, so the availability of Harris could be key. Carlos Rogers has moved into a starting role opposite Shawn Springs in recent weeks, with Harris sliding in as the third cornerback.

If Harris is unable to play, reserve cornerback Ade Jimoh could see increased playing time in the secondary.

Also listed as questionable for Sunday's game are defensive tackles Joe Salave'a (foot injury) and Cedric Killings (groin) and wide receiver James Thrash (hamstring).

Gibbs was not optimistic that Thrash would be able to play.

"James took some light work this week," Gibbs said. "I think he's getting closer, but I can't see him playing."

-- GIBBS AND THE CARDINALS

Head coach Joe Gibbs has had phenomenal success coaching against the Cardinals franchise.

Gibbs has a record of 20-4 all-time against the Cardinals, which played in St. Louis until 1988. The Cardinals then relocated to Phoenix.

During Gibbs' first stint as Redskins head coach, the St. Louis/Phoenix Cardinals were part of the NFC East and the two teams played twice a year. From 1990-93, Joe Bugel served as the Cardinals' head coach.

Gibbs got his start in the NFL coaching for the Cardinals' franchise. In 1973, he joined the coaching staff of Don Coryell in St. Louis and was the offensive backfield coach for four seasons. During that time, the Cardinals were 42-27-1, earning two NFC East crowns.

-- EXTRA WORK FOR JACOBS

Wide receiver Taylor Jacobs is consistently the last player off the practice fields at Redskins Park. He regularly takes extra work after practice ends.

On Friday, Jacobs stood by himself, standing in about a two inches of snow, catching balls from a passing drill machine for about 20 minutes after practice.
