News & Notes: Cooley, Jarmon Placed On Injured Reserve

Injuries continue to pile up for the Redskins.

The team placed tight end Chris Cooley and defensive end Jeremy Jarmon on injured reserve on Monday.

Cooley has not been able to come back from a fractured ankle suffered on Oct. 26 vs. Philadelphia. Jarmon suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during the Redskins' 27-24 loss to Philadelphia last Sunday.

Cooley had surgery two days after the injury.

It was hoped that he could be back in the lineup in early December following the surgery. However, he remained in a protective walking boot last week and it was increasingly uncertain if he would be able to return this season.

With the Redskins at 3-8 and unlikely to make the postseason, team officials opted to not rush Cooley back.

On Monday, head coach Jim Zorn met with Cooley before deciding to put him on injured reserve.

"I want to work out in my mind the right away to do it," Zorn told reporters during a mid-day press conference. "I'm going to meet with him, we're going to talk about it and just come up with a plan."

Cooley, who has made the Pro Bowl each of the last two years, finished the season with 29 catches for 332 yards and two touchdowns.

Second-year tight end Fred Davis has replaced Cooley in the lineup the last four games. Davis has posted 27 catches for 266 yards and two touchdowns this season.

Jarmon will also undergo surgery to repair the injury.

The 6-3, 277-pound rookie, picked up through the NFL Supplemental Draft last July, suffered the knee ligament injury on kickoff coverage early in the second quarter.

It's a disappointing conclusion to Jarmon's season.

With the Redskins unlikely to make the playoffs, Jarmon could have seen increased playing time in the final weeks.

"It's unfortunate," Zorn said. "This is part of football. The good thing about it is that Jarmon will have the whole offseason to get himself going. He has to get his [ACL] repaired.

"He is a good player and he is going to see time in the future. It is a setback, but it's not career-threatening. He is just starting out."

-- PORTIS OUT VS. SAINTS

As expected, Jim Zorn has ruled out Clinton Portis for Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints.

Portis is expected to be evaluated by a concussion specialist on the Monday following the Saints game.

The Redskins could start to ease him back into practice this week, though.

"We're going to try to get him going and see if we can get those symptoms to not reoccur," Zorn said.

Portis has not played since Nov. 8 when he suffered his concussion during a game in Atlanta.

Injured reserve is not a consideration for Portis, Zorn said.

"He's a guy we want to participate and be a Redskin player," Zorn said. "If he's healthy, he's going to want to go. I think all of those things are compelling. We're going to make sure his head is right, and that's why we're taking the precautions we are."

-- JACKSON, BOWEN SIGNED TO ROSTER

The Redskins have promoted practice squad defensive end Rob Jackson and linebacker Alvin Bowen to the 53-man roster, the team announced on Monday.

Jackson and Bowen take the roster spots of Chris Cooley and Jeremy Jarmon, who were placed on injured reserve.

Jackson, 6-4 and 269 pounds, spent the first 12 weeks of this season on the Redskins' practice squad after being released by Washington following preseason.

He has been with the Redskins since the team originally drafted him in the seventh round (No. 242 overall) of the 2008 draft.

Bowen signed with the Redskins' practice squad on Sept. 24 after spending the first two weeks of the season the Bills' practice squad.

The 6-foot-1, 223-pound Bowen was selected by Buffalo in the fourth round (247 overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft out of Iowa State. He spent his entire rookie season on injured reserve after suffering a knee injury in training camp.

-- HALL, HAYNESWORTH ON THE WAY BACK?

DeAngelo Hall is "questionable" for Sunday's game against New Orleans as he continues to recover from a sprained knee.

"He is trying to work his way back," Jim Zorn said. "We're going to try to get him more active in drill work and see how his leg feels."

Albert Haynesworth is expected to work his way back on the practice field this week.

"His ankle is feeling better," Zorn said. "He is still trying to work on getting that strength back to make those lateral moves. We'll see how he feels by the end of the week."

Both Hall and Haynesworth missed Sunday's game in Philadelphia.
