News & Notes: Haynesworth Inactive Again

The Redskins' defense was shorthanded in Sunday's 27-24 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, with defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth and cornerback DeAngelo Hall both among the team's pre-game inactives.

Haynesworth was deactivated as he continues to rehab a sprained ankle, while Hall was ruled out due to a sprained knee.

Haynesworth, who also missed last week's game at Dallas, was able to run on the treadmill last week but otherwise he sat out practice. He was listed as questionable heading into the game.

Kedric Golston started in his place beside Cornelius Griffin at defensive tackle and Anthony Montgomery saw playing time as well.

With Hall out, Carlos Rogers and Fred Smoot started at cornerback for the Redskins.

The Redskins' complete list of inactives was as follows: Hall, running back Clinton Portis, tight end Chris Cooley, linebacker Robert Henson, offensive lineman Paul Fanaika, Haynesworth and defensive end Renaldo Wynn.

Richard Bartel, signed last week by the Redskins, served as the third quarterback.

-- WILLIAMS GETS FIRST START

Edwin Williams made his first NFL start on Sunday, lining up at right guard against the Philadelphia Eagles.

It was a whirlwind week for Williams, who stepped in at right guard last Sunday in Dallas when Chad Rinehart suffered a fractured fibula.

Williams got the starting nod for the Eagles game ahead of Mike Williams, who served in a backup role at right guard and right tackle.

"It's just going to be a different mindset to have," Edwin Williams said before the game. "You have to have a mental checklist down so that you know what you're supposed to be doing each play. You just want to go out here and let loose."

And if there's confusion, Williams can turn to center Casey Rabach, who barks out instructions at the line of scrimmage, and right tackle Stephon Heyer, his former line-mate at the University of Maryland.

"People underrate Casey, but he puts us in the right position each and every play," Williams said. "He is going to tell us the assignments each and every play. He's going to be communicating to me and I have Stephon to the right.

"So I have a good group of guys who are going to talk to me every play and give me that communication and information so I can effectively block the plays."

-- BARNES GETS IN

Rookie Kevin Barnes made his NFL debut on Sunday, seeing action on special teams and at cornerback late in the Eagles game.

Barnes, who was inactive for the Redskins' first 10 games, was needed to provide depth at cornerback.

At pre-game, the secondary was minus DeAngelo Hall, who was sidelined with a sprained knee.

Then, in the fourth quarter, Fred Smoot suffered a blow to the head and Justin Tryon had a hip pointer.

Barnes, the Redskins' third-round draft choice last April, was called into duty.

He gave wide receivers a cushion on defense and allowed a 6-yard reception to fellow rookie Jeremy Maclin on a 3rd-and-5 play.

Barnes finished the game with one tackle.
