News & Notes: Haynesworth's Hip Injury 'Should Be Fine'

Albert Haynesworth has been diagnosed with a strained glute, according to head coach Jim Zorn.

Haynesworth suffered the injury in Sunday's game at Detroit.

"It's high up on the hip," Zorn said. "I think he's going to be fine."

Haynesworth, the Redskins 6-6, 350-pound defensive tackle, suffered the injury when he sacked Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford in the second quarter.

Haynesworth was treated on the field for several minutes and was eventually carted off the field.

Midway through the third quarter, Haynesworth returned to the game and was part of the Redskins' defensive line rotation.

Haynesworth was evaluated on Monday by a doctor in Nashville, where he lives in the offseason.

Haynesworth's status is expected to be updated on Wednesday, when the Redskins must release their first injury report in preparation for the Oct. 4 game against Tampa Bay.

-- PORTIS HAS CALF INJURY

Clinton Portis suffered a minor calf injury in Sunday's game at Detroit.

The injury sidelined him in the latter stages of the game, Jim Zorn said.

It's uncertain when Portis suffered the injury. Portis's last carry of the game was midway through the first quarter.

He was "kicked in the calf," Zorn said.

Zorn praised Portis on Monday, saying he "ran the ball very hard" despite two sore ankles.

Portis was questionable heading into the game.

"He had a good game," Zorn said. "He did a real nice job of helping us in protection schemes. We only got him a few touches in he first half and then we started to put things together in the second [half]."

Portis finished with 12 carries for 42 yards. He also caught one pass for six yards.

-- RINEHART RETURN?

Chad Rinehart made his NFL debut against the Detroit Lions and "did a nice job," Jim Zorn said.

Enough to warrant another start at right guard?

"I think he did enough," Zorn said. "He competed really hard. [Joe Bugel] is never satisfied as we evaluate guys and I have to talk to Buges as to what he wants to do there. But he's going to keep those guys ready to go."

The Redskins ran the ball to the right side of the line six times--all by Clinton Portis--in the game. Portis picked up 38 yards.

"I thought [Rinehart] did a nice job in the run game," Zorn said. "He didn't affect my play-calling at all. He was decent in the pass game.

"We'll see what happens. This will be a new week, a new team to go against, and hopefully he'll get that much better."

-- FOR MOSS, IT'S TEAM FIRST

Santana Moss was a bright spot on Sunday with 10 catches for a career-high 178 yards and one touchdown, a 57-yarder early in the third quarter.

To regain early season momentum, Moss emphasized that the Redskins have to avoid thinking as individuals.

"It's all about team--that's the only way we can get better," Santana Moss said. "We have high profile guys, but until all of us come together as a team and we're on the same plane, and have the same thing in mind, that's the way you win in this league.

"You see team after team do it. They don't have this and that, they just have a team that goes out there and plays well together. I feel like we do that at times, but not consistently."
