News & Notes: It's Montgomery At Right Guard Now

Will Montgomery is going to start at right guard in Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs, Jim Zorn said.

Montgomery starts ahead of Chad Rinehart, who has a shoulder injury.

"We have to have somebody that can practice what we are doing, so [Montgomery] is going to go," Zorn said.

For Montgomery, it is his first start as a Redskin.

"Definitely, I'll be ready," Montgomery said. "This is why you put in all the hard work in the offseason and training camp. You're here to play, not sit on the sidelines. It's going to be fun."

Montgomery, a native of Centreville, Va., is a third-year player out of Virginia Tech. He has had prior stints with the Carolina Panthers and New York Jets. He has started five games at left guard and one game at right guard in his career.

Montgomery joined the Redskins in December 2008.

He was called into action at right guard in Week 2 this season when Randy Thomas suffered a season-ending triceps injury.

Rinehart started at right guard the next two weeks.

Mike Williams replaced Rinehart in last Sunday's game at Carolina.

With Chris Samuels sidelined for the Chiefs game, Williams shifts to right tackle and Stephon Heyer shifts to left tackle.

Asked about the offensive line depth, Zorn said: "Well, I'm glad we have Mike Williams, I'm glad we have Derrick Dockery and I'm glad we have Casey Rabach. Casey--he's just a tremendous leader out there. He's really the glue and he's pulling everybody together."

-- SMITH STILL SIDELINED, SO PAKULAK'S BACK

Hunter Smith sat out practice on Wednesday as he continues to return from a groin injury.

With Smith still sidelined, the Redskins brought back Glenn Pakulak to the practice squad. If Smith cannot play this Sunday against Kansas City, then Pakulak would be signed to the 53-man roster to play in the game.

As a member of the Redskins' 53-man roster last week at Carolina, Pakulak punted five times for a 42.4 average, with one inside the 20, one touchback and a long of 57 yards. His net average was 35.6 yards.

Meantime, Smith has not punted a ball since suffering his injury in Week 5 vs. Tampa Bay.

"I'm taking it day to day," Smith said. "It's getting better, but I don't want to rush back out there and re-aggravate it."

Last Sunday, Smith sat out his first NFL game in 11 years in the league.

"I didn't like it," he said. "I want to be out there helping the team."

-- PORTIS THE BLOCKER

Clinton Portis has made highlight reels with his occasionally ferocious blocks in pass protection.

With so many changes to the offensive line this week, Portis could be required to stay in and help block for Jason Campbell.

"The Kansas City Chiefs, their defensive line is very talented and they are going to try to get after Jason Campbell," Portis said. "Our offensive line is banged up and every team is going to try and get at the quarterback.

"We need to go out and be able to hold up and block for Jason, get him into those 5- and 7-step drops."

-- GRIFFIN, DANIELS UPDATE

Cornelius Griffin and Phillip Daniels sat out practice on Wednesday. Griffin has been slowed by an elbow injury and Daniels has a torn biceps.

Griffin saw limited playing time in last Sunday's game at Carolina.

Daniels expects to play through his injury--instead of having season-ending surgery--and he hopes to start this week's game vs. Kansas City.

Albert Haynesworth (ankle) and Anthony Montgomery (knee) were limited in Wednesday's practice.
