Wide receiver Taylor Jacobs returned to practice on Monday, the first action he has seen since the Redskins' Aug. 6 preseason scrimmage against the Baltimore Ravens. Jacobs had been sidelined with a lingering toe injury.

"It feels okay," Jacobs said after practice. "I made it all the way toward the end of practice. We'll ice it a whole lot and it'll get better.

Asked if thought he could play in this Sunday's regular season opener against the Chicago Bears, Jacobs replied: "I'll be available and ready to go, but I'm not sure if they're going to activate me or not."

Jacobs' status is day-to-day, head coach Joe Gibbs said.

"I think that we'll watch him as he progresses this week," Gibbs said. "Today is the first day he actually had pads on and ran routes. He looked pretty good. So we'll have to see how he looks on Wednesday and Thursday, but the decision will go down toward game day."

Jacobs' availability for this Sunday could be key. The Redskins decided to keep only five wide receivers on the active roster and the fifth is kick return specialist Antonio Brown, who has never caught a pass in NFL regular season play.

Strong safety Matt Bowen also returned to practice on Monday after missing last week with a bruised chest injury. His status will for Sunday's game will be announced later this week. The team typically issues an injury report on Wednesday before every game.

Sitting out Monday's practice were strong safety Ryan Clark (knee) and linebacker Chris Clemons (hamstring). After sitting out the Aug. 26 preseason game against Pittsburgh, Clark had returned to start the preseason finale against Baltimore.

Clark is expected to be back at practice on Wednesday, Gibbs said.

"He is day-to-day and we'll just have to see how he progresses," Gibbs said.

The Redskins signed rookie defensive back Dimitri Patterson to the team's practice squad on Monday, rounding out the eight-member unit.

Patterson is a 5-11, 196-pound cornerback who played at Tuskegee last year. As a senior, he earned All-SIAC honors.

Patterson was a participant in the team's three-day Rookie Camp in late April.

Along with linebacker Zak Keasey, running back Jonathan Combs and offensive lineman Jon Alston, there were four tryout players who earned spots on the Redskins' roster or practice squad.

With the roster now set, there was a flurry of jersey number changes announced by the team:

• Safety Omar Stoutmire has switched to No. 23 (last worn by cornerback Ade Jimoh)

• Jimoh has taken No. 32 (last worn in the regular season by Kenny Watson in 2002)

• Linebacker Zak Keasey will wear No. 55 (last worn in the regular season by Kevin Mitchell in 2003)

• Tight end Brian Kozlowski has switched to No. 85 (last worn by Darnerien McCants)

On the practice squad, cornerback Christian Morton will wear No. 29, cornerback Dmitri Patterson will wear No. 34, running back Jonathan Combs will wear No. 38, tight end Robert Johnson will wear No. 87 and defensive lineman Aki Jones will wear No. 94.
