The Redskins have signed punter Glenn Pakulak to the practice squad, the team announced on Tuesday.

To make room for Pakulak, the Redskins released wide receiver Trent Shelton from the practice squad.

The Redskins needed to add another punter after veteran Hunter Smith suffered a groin injury in last Sunday's 16-13 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

For now, Smith remains the only punter on the Redskins' active roster.

If Smith's groin injury improves this week, he could be available to play in Sunday's game at Carolina.

If Smith is unable to play, then Pakulak could be signed to the active roster on Friday or Saturday.

Pakulak was one of four punters to try out for the Redskins on Tuesday. Sam Paulescu, Waylon Prather and Ricky Schmitt were also on hand.

Pakulak, 6-3 and 220 pounds, is a second-year punter out of Kentucky. He is 29 years old.

Pakulak split time with the New York Jets and New Orleans Saints in 2009 training camp.

He saw his first NFL action with the Saints in 2008, playing in eight games. He posted 24 punts for a 47.7-yard average and a 37.8-yard net average. He placed three punts inside the 20.

Pakulak joined the NFL as an undrafted rookie free agent with the Seattle Seahawks in 2003. He has also had stints with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Atlanta Falcons, Tennessee Titans, Chicago Bears and Oakland Raiders.

Pakulak is a native of Pontiac, Mich. As a senior at Kentucky, he ranked third in the nation with a 45.6-yard average per punt.

-- REDSKINS WORK OUT HENRY, TOO

Free agent running back Chris Henry worked out for Redskins coaches on Tuesday.

Henry is a third-year veteran who has spent his entire career with the Tennessee Titans. He was drafted by the Titans in the second round (50th overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft.

The 5-11, 230-pounder has played in 10 career games and posted 122 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries. He has also caught six passes for 53 yards.

He saw the bulk of his action as a rookie. His background includes a four-game suspension from the NFL in 2007 after he tested positive for a banned prescription medication.

Henry played college football at the University of Arizona.
