News & Notes: Redskins Survive Favre Fever

All week long, it was Brett Favre fever in New York.

And Saturday night's Redskins-Jets matchup brought with it a throng of national media as the heralded Favre made his debut as the Jets' quarterback.

In the end, though, it was just a preseason game. The Redskins rallied in the fourth quarter to beat the Jets 13-10.

The Redskins' defense stymied Favre on the Jets' first drive, generating solid pressure on him. On a second drive, Favre guided the Jets to a touchdown and an early 7-0 lead.

Favre was 5-of-6 for 48 yards and one touchdown pass in two offensive series. He was replaced by backup Kellen Clemens in the second quarter.

Favre, in his 18th NFL season, completed his first pass of the game, an 11-yarder to wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery.

Later in the drive, Marcus Washington blitzed into the backfield and pressured Favre. Cornelius Griffin joined Washington in the backfield and they combined for a 10-yard sack.

On New York's second drive, Favre connected with Cotchery again for a 19-yard gain to the Redskins' 20-yard line.

Rookie Kareem Moore, who started at free safety for the injured LaRon Landry, leveled a punishing hit, but Cotchery held on to the ball.

Two plays later, Favre threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to tight end Dustin Keller, who had escaped coverage by Rocky McIntosh in the end zone.

Favre was done for the night, and so was the Redskins' defense.

-- BLADES CLOSE TO RETURN

H.B. Blades increased his practice work last Thursday, the first sign that the second-year linebacker could be nearing his return from a knee injury.

He sat out Saturday night's preseason game against the New York Jets.

Blades has been sidelined since July 29 after undergoing a knee scope.

"I'm just taking the steps to get to where I need to be," Blades said.

Blades said he had to use "a little persuasion" to convince coaches to let him practice.

"Sometimes I sneak in a little bit," he admitted. "When you see your teammates out there going through 2-a-days, I just want to be out there with him. I want to go through the grind with them."

Blades won't play in Saturday night's preseason game against the Jets.

"He is starting to work through getting some weight on the knee and see how it responds," Jim Zorn said. "He is coming along just fine."

-- MCINTOSH, ROGERS IN ACTION

Rocky McIntosh and Carlos Rogers returned to the starting lineup in Saturday's preseason game.

They both were coming back from knee ligament injuries suffered last year.

Rogers was part of coverage on Jerricho Cotchery's 19-yard reception in the first quarter. He combined with Kareem Moore on the tackle.

After the game, Rogers said his knee felt fine.

"It felt good to get my feet wet," he said.

McIntosh returned to the site where he injured his knee last year in a Week 15 game against the New York Giants.

He recorded a tackle of running back Thomas Jones on the Jets' first drive.

McIntosh was part of coverage when Brett Favre connected with tight end Dustin Keller for a 4-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter.

-- POST-GAME INJURY UPDATE

Randy Thomas suffered a right knee strain in the first half of Saturday's game against the Jets.

Ladell Betts had a mild sprained right knee, suffered in the first quarter.

Todd Collins took a hard hit late in the first half and suffered a stinger injury, but he returned to the game.

Rian Wallace suffered a dislocated shoulder injury in the second half.

The status of injured players will be updated on Sunday, team officials said.

-- BUGEL STILL IN ARIZONA

Offensive line coach Joe Bugel was not in attendance at Saturday's game against the Jets. Bugel remains in Phoenix to be with his daughter Holly, who has a rare form of bone cancer.

Bugel left the team shortly after the Redskins' preseason game against Buffalo on Aug. 9 at FedExField.

Offensive coordinator Sherman Smith and tight ends coach Rennie Simmons have worked with the offensive line in Bugel's absence.
