The Redskins re-signed Renaldo Wynn to the roster on Monday and released punter Glenn Pakulak, the team has announced.

The release of Pakulak signals that Hunter Smith's status is improving. Smith sat out Sunday's game in Carolina with a groin injury.

Pakulak, a second-year punter who has had NFL stints with several teams, was Smith's replacement. He logged five punts for a 38.4-yard average, with one placed inside the 20.

On Monday, Smith said he "should be able to play" in the Redskins' upcoming game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

"Rest is the important with this injury," he said.

Wynn was released last Saturday to make room for Pakulak on the roster.

Wynn was on the Redskins' roster the first four games of the regular season but was inactive every week.

The 6-3, 280-pounder previously played for the Redskins from 2002-06. He has 27 career sacks.

-- ZORN: 'HEARTBREAKING' LOSS

During Jim Zorn's press conference on Monday at Redskins Park, reporters asked him how he was feeling given the stress of losing and the tension of his job status swirling in the media.

"I just get right back at it," Zorn replied. "It's so hard to do this with these kinds of losses. It's just heartbreaking. It's my responsibility, nobody else's, and I know that. I have resolve. I have commitment and I'm going to get right back in line and we're going to do it again."

How does he move forward?

"I ask myself questions, 'What are we doing? Are we doing it right? Do we have the elements we need to be a successful offense? Has the scheme taken advantage of our opponents? Are we changing things up that can't be found in certain elements?" Zorn said.

"The answers to those questions are sometimes yes, sometimes unchanging. The overall picture is that we've got to keep pushing. I don't have a lot of time devoted to worrying about my job status if I do a good job."

-- COOLEY'S STREAK ENDS

Chris Cooley's streak of 76 consecutive games with a catch came to an end in Sunday's loss to the Carolina Panthers.

Cooley did not have a pass thrown in his direction in the game. He was required to stay and help D'Anthony Batiste and Stephon Heyer block as the offensive line struggled in pass protection.

Still, Jim Zorn said there were opportunities to get Cooley the ball.

"We had several opportunities to give him the ball and either we couldn't because of coverage or because of protection," Zorn said. "He's always fresh on my mind to try to get him the ball.

"Not just specifically to him, but that pass route combination where we can free him up. Sometimes the ball has to be dropped off, sometimes it's thrown to somebody else, but he's in the mix to catch balls often."
