News & Notes: Zorn Searches For Positives

In an otherwise disappointing Thursday evening, Jim Zorn tried to glean some positives after the Redskins' offense was shut out 23-0 by the Baltimore Ravens.

Pass protection by the first-team offense was, for the most part, solid.

Jason Campbell was composed and focused in his two series.

Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly made some nice catches.

Beyond that? Plenty of room for improvement as the Redskins resume training camp this weekend.

Besides getting shut out, the Redskins turned the ball over twice--once on a fumble by Fred Davis and once on a Colt Brennan interception.

"We need to finish drives and we have to do a better job of hanging on to the ball," Zorn said during a halftime interview. "We dropped some passes and had the fumble [by Davis] on a potential scoring drive. We have to earn the right to finish a drive."

The Redskins logged just 196 yards of offense and 11 first downs. They were 1-of-11 on third-down conversions.

Campbell played two series and completed 3-of-6 passes for 38 yards.

"Jason did a nice job keeping his focus down the field," Zorn said. "I just wish that we could have gotten the first-team offense into the end zone."

-- HALL'S BIG PLAY

The Ravens drove downfield on their opening drive and faced 3rd-and-goal at the 3-yard line.

Joe Flacco dropped back to pass and threw to Derrick Mason at the goal line. DeAngelo Hall was there to swat the ball away.

The Ravens had to settle for a 21-yard field goal.

"We were on the goal line and that's when it counts," Hall said. "We're trying to be the No. 1 defense, and it's no secret. We know we have to step it up, especially down at the goal line.

"I went into the huddle and told the guys, 'Hey, this is where you make your name, right here.' The ball came outside. We kind of knew they wanted to do something similar to that. I just made a good play."

-- ON MICHAEL VICK

Word filtered in the M&T Bank Stadium press box around 8:30 p.m.: the Philadelphia Eagles had signed quarterback Michael Vick.

Quick, grab a media guide. When do the Redskins play the Eagles?

Week 7. At FedExField. Monday Night Football.

Vick, released from prison last month for running a dogfighting ring, could be suspended for the first six weeks of the season by the NFL.

So it's possible he could make his debut with the Eagles in Washington.

-- INJURY BUG

The Redskins suffered several injuries during Thursday's game.

The most serious appeared to be rookie offensive tackle Scott Burley, who suffered a sprained knee.

Lorenzo Alexander left the game in the first half due to an abdominal injury and Mike Williams left the game in the second half due to an abdominal injury.

Cody Glenn injured his ribs and Doug Dutch tweaked his hamstring.
