On this week's edition of NFC East Intel we have a look at the Eagles' surprising roster moves, the Giants possibly pursuing Ndamukong Suh and the Cowboys returning a majority of their receiving weapons.*
Philadelphia Eagles
Headline:Eagles Trade Away LeSean McCoy for Kiko Alonso
Eleven years after the Redskins made a shocking player-for-player trade for running back Clinton Portis, the Eagles on Tuesday night sent waves through the NFL by reportedly trading away running back LeSean McCoy to the Bills for linebacker Kiko Alonso.
What this means for the Redskins: McCoy had been a thorn in the side of the other three NFC East teams over the year, as he has the NFL's third-most rushing yards (6,792) since being drafted by the Eagles in the second-round of the 2009 NFL Draft.
But after leading the NFL in rushing yards (1,607) on 314 carries in 2013, McCoy saw his number called less frequently in 2014, as Darren Sproles and Chris Polk combined for 103 carries.
Alonso, meanwhile, has ties to Eagles head coach Chip Kelly, as he played under him while he held the same position at Oregon.
During his rookie season in 2013, Alonso recorded 159 tackles and four interceptions, but missed all of last season with a torn ACL.
Headline:Eagles To Cut Ties With Trent Cole
While the McCoy trade grabbed headlines, the Eagles on Tuesday also elected to release Trent Cole who had been with the team since 2005.
What this means for the Redskins:
The Eagles had obviously made changes over Kelly's first two seasons at the helm as they formed to his mold, but one of the most productive holdovers from the Andy Reid era was Cole, as the Cincinnati product had 13 sacks over the last two seasons.
Over the course of his 11 seasons in Philadelphia, Coles racked up 436 tackles and 85.5 sacks.
But at 32 years old, the Eagles are going to release Cole in hopes that they can clear salary cap space to sign some of their younger players.
NEW YORK GIANTS
Headline:Giants May Pursue Ndamukong Suh In Free Agency
After the Lions and Suh couldn't reach a long-term deal, and they declined to apply the franchise tag by Monday's 4 p.m. deadline, the former second-overall pick is going to be the hottest pursued free agent on the market next week. The Giants could be coming for his services.
What this means for the Redskins:Suh's name has been linked to several teams recently through reports – even the Redskins.
For the Giants, though, they don't have nearly as much cap space as some other teams, but they still may look to add Suh to the mix.
Taken with the second-overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Nebraska product quickly became one of the best interior linemen in the NFL. In 2014, he recorded 53 tackles and 8.5 sacks -- numbers rare to come from a guy in his position.
For his career, Suh has 239 tackles and 36 sacks.
Earlier this week the Giants placed the franchise tag on Jason Pierre-Paul.
DALLAS COWBOYS
Headline:Cowboys And Cole Beasley Reach New Deal
After slapping the franchise tag on wide receiver Dez Bryant Monday, the Cowboys on Tuesday signed Cole Beasley to a new deal.
What this means for the Redskins:Undrafted out of Southern Methodist, Beasley signed with the Cowboys before the 2012 season, providing both play making ability from the slot while also occasionally filling in as a returner.
In 40 games with Dallas, Beasley recorded 91 receptions for 916 yards and six touchdowns. He has also helped the Cowboys gain 54 first downs during that span as well.
As it stands now, the Cowboys are returning their top four receiving targets – Beasley, Bryant Terrance Williams and Jason Witten – from last season.
