Noble Held Out Of Season Opener

The Redskins deactivated Brandon Noble for Sunday's season opener against the Chicago Bears. The veteran defensive tackle had "tweaked" his surgically repaired left knee during a practice last week, according to head coach Joe Gibbs.

Ryan Boschetti and Cedric Killings saw action in place of Noble, who was is a backup to starter Joe Salave'a.

Noble was listed as questionable heading into the game, but he said on Friday that he hoped to play.

In 2003, Noble had reconstructive surgery on the knee after suffering an injury during a preseason game. The 6-2, 305-pounder returned last year to play in 16 games, with seven starts. He recorded 38 tackles (19 solo) and one sack and was named the Redskins' Ed Block Courage Award winner.

Noble's status for the Sept. 19 game against the Dallas Cowboys will be determined mid-week.

The defense was without safety Ryan Clark (knee) and linebacker Chris Clemons, both of whom missed practice all last week.

Also declared inactive were wide receiver Taylor Jacobs, defensive lineman Nic Clemons and offensive lineman Jim Molinaro. Jacobs missed one day of practice last week due to a lingering toe injury, but he seemed to be progressing later in the week.

The Redskins' third quarterback for the game was Jason Campbell.

Redskins' rookies Carlos Rogers and Zak Keasey made their NFL debut on Sunday.

The Bears listed quarterback Rex Grossman, defensive backs Daven Holly and Chris Thompson, linebacker Leon Joe, defensive lineman Israel Idonije, offensive lineman Qasim Mitchell and wide receiver Bobby Wade.

Rookie quarterback Kyle Orton started for Grossman, with Jeff Blake serving as the backup. The Bears' third quarterback was Kurt Kittner.
