On Emotional Day, Fans Honor Taylor

Redskins fans paid their respects to Sean Taylor on Sunday at FedExField, with 85,831 in attendance at the game against the Buffalo Bills.

Thousands of fans began the day of football by stopping by the makeshift memorial outside the Redskins Hall of Fame Store at the stadium.

The No. 21 was painted on a grassy area outside the store, and fans left flowers, cards and signs at the memorial.

At entranceways to the stadium, fans were given white towels with a burgundy and gold No. 21 inscribed on it. Throughout the game, fans waved the towel in unison.

Inside the stadium, countless fans were decked out in No. 21 jerseys.

The Redskins wore a black and white No. 21 patch on the right side of their uniform. This was in addition to the No. 21 decal placed on helmets on all NFL teams.

The team hosted a tribute to Taylor during pre-game, including a moving 4-minute video that included comments from Taylor's coaches and teammates and some of his many highlights in four seasons in Washington. The video was produced by Redskins.com TV's Tim DeLaney.

League-wide, a moment of silence for Taylor was held prior to the National Anthem.

It was an emotional moment for an emotional game.

The crowded erupted when Clinton Portis scored a touchdown in the third quarter. Portis lifted up his jersey to reveal a Sean Taylor tee-shirt underneath. Then Portis clasped his hands and waved them together, symbolizing a dove.

It was a tough ending, as the Bills won 17-16 on a last-second field goal.

Players were upset after the disappointing loss, but they thanked fans for doing their part.

"We just want to say thanks to all the fans for all the support they gave us this week and being there for us," Jason Campbell said. "Even after we lost, there were still a lot of them in there standing, rooting us on and trying to give us a lot of encouragement."

Added Marcus Washington: "The crowd was definitely in it. It is amazing to see how big of an effect Sean had on so many kids in this area. There are some huge Sean Taylor fans. I think this will pull our team and the city closer together."
