Portis: Offense 'Struggled' In Browns Game

Q: Are you surprised at the team's 1-3 record at this point of the season?

A: "I do not believe we are a 1-3 football team. But we are 1-3. If you go up and down our roster, you still would not believe we are 1-3. We have to find a way to get the job done. The offense is struggling. The offense needs to contribute. We are leaving the defense on the field too long. Our defense is fighting and they're holding up. But we need to put up points."

Q: Were you able to find many open running lanes?

A: "It seemed like the Browns knew every play we were doing. At one point, the defensive guys were calling out our plays and they were hitting the gaps before and after us. It was like running into a brick wall. But it doesn't matter. I take the blame for this game and I take the blame for the Giants game. I have to play better."

Q: What happened on the fumble?

A: "I thought I was trying to get off the fumble. I thought I was down and the ball came loose. [The referees] did not see it that way. But I have to hold on to the ball better. That's what it comes down to--I put the ball on the ground."

Q: What is bogging down the offense?

A: "I can't tell you what's wrong exactly. You can't tell me there's another team in the NFL working harder than we are. I go out and I play with heart every day. I still play the same way. I think out of frustration, you try to create something and that can get you in trouble."

Q: Why do you think you haven't been able to break many long gains?
A: "I'm seeing eight defenders in the box and I just have to find a way to make somebody miss a tackle. I'm going to continue to put this on my shoulders. If they call on me, I'm going to be there. I don't try to be a 2-yard or 3-yard runner. If it's there, I'll take it, but I'm a home run hitter and I haven't hit a home run since the first play of the season. Someway, somehow, we have to find a way to get out of this."

Q: How much are you and the offensive line still getting on the same page?

A: "The O-line is fighting hard. They're creating holes for me. But the defenses are just making plays right now."
