Portis To Wear No. 26

The Redskins' jersey number mini-controversy between running back Clinton Portis and safety Ifeanyi Ohalete has been resolved: Portis has worked out an arrangement with Ohalete and will wear jersey No. 26. Ohalete will wear jersey No. 30.

Portis made his debut in his new Redskins jersey at mini-camp practice on Friday.

Portis wore jersey No. 26 as a member of the Denver Broncos the last two seasons. The former Miami Hurricane rushed for more than 1,500 yards each of the last years with the Broncos.

"I feel like Superman now--I have my cape back," Portis said.

Portis had been lobbying for the number since joining the Redskins in a trade for Champ Bailey last March.

Other jersey number changes announced at this weekend's mini-camp: John Simon is wearing No. 31, Kenyatta Jones is wearing No. 74, Ryan Boschetti is wearing No. 73, Clifton Smith is wearing No. 54, Garnell Wilds is wearing No. 38 and Michael Hall is wearing No. 35.

James Thrash is wearing No. 3 for the second mini-camp in a row. That number is believed to be temporary.

Newcomer Fred Baxter, a tight end signed earlier this week, is wearing No. 43, but that number is also thought to be temporary.
