Clinton Portis won NFC Offensive Player of the Month honors for the month of October, another accomplishment in what is shaping up as a special season for the seventh-year running back.

Portis compiled 575 rushing yards on 101 carries--a 5.6 yards-per-carry average--in four games in October. He logged four rushing touchdowns as the Redskins went 3-1.

"Another 'atta boy,'" Portis said on Wednesday, joking with reporters because the award brings no plaque or prize. "Another 'Congratulations, Clinton.' No card, no nothing."

Seriously, Portis added: "It's great to have that accomplishment."

Jim Zorn called the award "well deserved."

"He has proven that week-in and week-out that he can run hard and make those yards," Zorn said. "It's kind of a team award in my mind because we have to play good defense to get the ball back and our offensive line has to do a good job to get those seams that he can run through."

Portis had his best game on Oct. 19 against the Cleveland Browns. He had 175 yards on 27 carries as the Redskins relied on a strong ground game to beat the Browns 14-11 at FedExField.

For the month, Portis also led all players with 616 yards from scrimmage, a 143.8 yards-per-game rushing average, 28 first downs and 15 runs of 10 yards or more.

It's the first time that Portis has won the monthly award in his NFL career. He won AFC Offensive Rookie of the Month honors with the Denver Broncos in 2002.

The last Redskins player to earn a Player of the Month award was Todd Collins in December 2007. The last Redskins running back to earn the honor was Terry Allen in October 1996.

For the season, Portis has totaled an NFL-best 944 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 187 carries.

Portis is on pace for 1,888 rushing yards, which would be a personal high as well as set a franchise mark.

He is also on pace for 374 carries, which would set a personal mark but trail Redskins great John Riggins' franchise record of 375 set in 1983.
