Redskins Earn Playoff Bid...Tampa Is Next!

With Sunday's 31-20 win over the Philadelphia Eagles, the Redskins have qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 1999.

As a Wild Card participant and the sixth seed in the NFC, the Redskins will travel to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium on Saturday, Jan. 7. Game time is 4:30 p.m. ET.

The game will be televised by ABC-TV.

"It's a huge deal anytime you get in the playoffs," head coach Joe Gibbs said. "We showed guts and determination. I feel humbled and really thankful to get in. It was a hard-fought game and I was just thrilled to get out on the right end of it."

Gibbs added: "We played in a really tough division this year and I think we'll be battle-tested."

The Redskins lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 36-35 in Week 10 in a memorable--and controversial--contest at Raymond James Stadium.

It was a back-and-forth game, and Washington held a 35-28 late in the fourth quarter. The Bucs scored on a 30-yard pass from Chris Simms to Edell Shepherd, who dove past cornerback Walt Harris to pull in the ball in the end zone.

After the Redskins were flagged for an off-sides penalty on the game-tying extra point, the Bucs surprised everyone by going for the two-point conversion. Fullback Mike Alstott dove into the line and the referees raised their hands, giving Tampa Bay a 36-35 edge.

Replays were inconclusive, but one angle appeared to show that Alstott was just short of the goal line.

Now the Redskins get a chance to avenge that loss.

"Their defense is tough," Gibbs said. "We know it's going to be stacked against us, but at least we have the opportunity and the chance."

The Redskins and Buccaneers have played once before in the postseason. In 1999, Tampa Bay defeated Washington 14-13 at Raymond James Stadium in the NFC Divisional round.
