Redskins Host Workout For Local Prospects

NFL hopefuls crowded into Redskins Park on Friday afternoon, eager to show off their skills for Redskins coaches and scouts. The team hosted its annual local workout for draft-eligible players who either played college or high school football in the Washington, D.C. area.

"The workout is a great opportunity for these players to get a look by an NFL team," vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato said. "It also gives us an opportunity to find some players that didn't attend large football programs or didn't work out at the NFL Scouting Combine [in February]."

The bulk of NFL hopefuls on hand hailed from local colleges Maryland, Howard and Bowie State. Georgetown, Penn State and Virginia Tech also had several players on hand.

Two Maryland defenders were the biggest names at the local workout: linebacker D'Qwell Jackson and cornerback Gerrick McPhearson.

Jackson is expected to be a first- or second-round selection in the NFL Draft, scheduled for April 29-30. The 6-0, 228-pound inside linebacker logged a team-high 137 tackles and four sacks last season for the Terrapins.

In some NFL Draft guides, Jackson is listed as the top inside linebacker available in the draft. He is regarded as an aggressive and physical linebacker, but somewhat under-sized. Some coaches and scouts have projected him as a weak-side linebacker on a team that runs a Cover 2 defense.

McPhearson is projected to be a third- or fourth-round pick in the draft. The 5-10, 192-pound cornerback grew up in Columbia, Md., and attended Howard High School in Ellicott City, Md. Last season with the Terrapins, he logged 37 tackles, one forced fumble and three fumble recoveries.

McPhearson had a strong showing at the NFL Scouting Combine last February. He has explosive speed and is regarded as a sure tackler, but some scouts have questioned how well he will perform against taller wide receivers at the NFL level.

Jackson and McPhearson did not work out for coaches and personnel officials, instead watching from the sidelines. They did chat with team officials after the workout.

Other local prospects given a close look at the workout were middle linebacker Mike Ononibaku of Georgetown, wide receiver Derrick Fenner of Maryland, offensive lineman Will Montgomery of Virginia Tech, running back Mike Imoh of Virginia Tech and tight end Wes Kesner of Tennessee.
