The Washington Redskins have added to their secondary in the 2018 NFL Supplemental Draft, selecting cornerback Adonis Alexander in the sixth round.

In a corresponding move, the Redskins waived punter Sam Irwin-Hill.

Alexander was the second player selected in this year's NFL Supplemental Draft, joining fellow cornerback Sam Beal, who the New York Giants took in the third round.

The 6-foot-3, 197 pounder spent three seasons with the Hokies, appearing in 34 games to record 91 tackles (4.5 for loss) along with 17 passes defensed, seven interceptions, one sack and one fumble forced.

During his freshman season, Alexander recorded 55 tackles with six passes defensed and four interceptions. He recorded interceptions in back-to-back weeks against Furman and Purdue respectively.

As a sophomore, the Charlotte native logged seven passes defensed and two interceptions.

In his final season at Virginia Tech in 2017, Alexander recorded 27 tackles (two for loss) with two interceptions and one sack.

According to NFL Network’s Bucky Brooks, Alexander "smothers receivers at the line of scrimmage with his aggressive shadow technique, while also displaying good instincts and ball skills."

"He routinely pins receivers to the sideline with the ball in the air to minimize the target area for the quarterback on downfield throws," Brooks writes. "In addition, Alexander will use his superior length to swat away 50-50 balls in critical situations.

With his addition to the roster, the Redskins now have nine cornerbacks on the roster as Alexander joins Josh Norman, Quinton Dunbar, Orlando Scandrick, Fabian Moreau, Joshua Holsey, Greg Stroman, Ranthony Texada and Danny Johnson.

Along with Stroman, Alexander also re-joins fellow college teammate Tim Settle along with his former positional coach for the Hokies in Torrian Gray.
