Redskins Re-Sign LB Kevin Mitchell

The Redskins announced today they have re-signed linebacker Kevin Mitchell. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. Mitchell is a solid veteran leader who has shown his versatility on defense and special teams again and again during his four seasons with the burgundy and gold.

Mitchell, 6-1 and 258 pounds, remains with the Redskins after playing with the team the past four seasons (2000-2003). He has played in 144 games starting 28 during his 10-year NFL career, amassing 300 tackles, two interceptions and 6.5 sacks. He has also played a key role on Redskins' special teams during his tenure, blocking a punt at Dallas (11/28/02) being one of his highlights.

In 2003, Mitchell played in all 16 games, recording eight tackles (six solo) and five special teams tackles. He registered his most productive season in 2001 when he started all 13 games played, recording career-highs in total tackles (82) and solo tackles (69). In addition, Mitchell recorded two sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He followed that with a solid 2002 campaign, playing in all 16 contests. He stepped in for injured starter Jeremiah Trotter and started the final three games of the season, recording 26 tackles (20 solo) and one interception for the year. He finished third on the team in special teams stops with 15.

Mitchell began his professional career with the San Francisco 49ers where he played for four years (1994-1997), primarily as a reserve. He joined the New Orleans Saints in 1998 where he played for two seasons (1998-1999). He started eight games in 1998 with the Saints, recording 56 tackles and a career-high 2.5 sacks.

Mitchell was drafted by San Francisco in the second round (54th overall) of the 1994 NFL Draft from Syracuse University. He started in every game during his collegiate career (48), earning Honorable Mention All-America and First-Team All-Big East honors as a junior and senior. He finished his career ranked third in school history with 21 sacks.

Mitchell attended Harrisburg High School (Pa.). In 2003, he was honored at a ceremony at Harrisburg High to retire his jersey.
