The Prince George's County Chamber of Commerce has honored the Washington Redskins as their Green Business of the Year award recipient.
The Redskins were recognized for their leadership and innovation in renewable energy solutions.
"We are honored to accept this award as the Green Business of the Year," said Executive Vice President/General Manager Bruce Allen. "We would like to thank NRG for their partnership and the Prince George's County Chamber of Commerce for their continued support and recognition."
The Redskins, along with NRG Energy, one of the largest energy companies in the United States, brought the largest solar installation of renewable energy in the region to FedExField in 2011.
Installed were three different types of solar panels that together will generate two megawatts of electricity.
With the installation of 8,000 solar panels covering 850 spaces in the Platinum A1 Parking Lot, the solar power system at FedExField provides a portion of the stadium's electricity needs on game days and can generate enough power to serve all of its electrical needs on non-game days.
The installation also included translucent solar panels, sculptures featuring thin film solar technology and 10 electric vehicle charging stations from NRG's eVgosm charging network.
The Green Business of the Year award was given on June 1, during the Prince George's County Chamber of Commerce 2012 Excellence in Business Award Gala held at the University of Maryland Mariott Hotel Grand Ball room.
The Excellence in Business Awards honor exemplary individuals, groups and businesses that have demonstrated significant growth, community involvement and leadership in Prince George's County, Md. in the past calendar year.
