Redskins Select LB Simon In 7th Round

The Washington Redskins selected linebacker Kevin Simon from the University of Tennessee with the No. 250 overall pick (seventh round) in the 2006 NFL Draft.

Touted as an explosive and instinctive athlete, Simon has the speed and versatility to add depth to Washington's aggressive linebacker corps.

Simon, 5-10 and 235 pounds, appeared in 30 games for the Volunteers during his four-year career and recorded 237 tackles (139 solo), 5.5 sacks, eight pass deflections and 13.5 tackles for loss.

Simon returned from injury in 2005 to record 88 stops (40 solo), one sack and five pass deflections.

His season was cut short in 2004 after he suffered a knee injury in the second game of the year. He recorded five tackles on the season.

Simon had his most prolific college season in 2003, leading the team in tackles with 115 (79 solo) and tied for the lead with 4.5 sacks while starting all 13 games. Against Marshall he recorded 12 tackles and three quarterback sacks.

In 2003, Simon suffered a broken ankle and missed the final nine games of the season. He had recorded 29 tackles on the year. Simon redshirted the 2001 season.

A native of Walnut Creek, Calif., Simon prepped at DeLaSalle High School where he was a three-year starter at linebacker. He also was a featured running back as a senior. He was named All-America by USA Today, Parade, PrepStar and SuperPrep.
