Redskins Sign Blaylock, Melendez, Smith

The Washington Redskins announced May 8 that they have signed running back Derrick Blaylock, wide receiver Dan Melendez and wide receiver Kyle Brown to the active roster.

Blaylock (5-9, 210 pounds) is entering his seventh NFL season after spending his last two years with the New York Jets. He played in four games with two starts in 2006.

Originally a fifth-round draft choice for Kansas City out of Stephen F. Austin, Blaylock has played in 51 career games with eight starts and rushed for 820 yards and 10 touchdowns on 198 carries.

His best season came in 2004 in Kansas City when he rushed for 539 yards and eight touchdowns on 118 carries.

Melendez (6-2, 173 pounds) came out of Maryland in 2006 and was signed as an undrafted rookie free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs.

He was brought into the Redskins rookie mini-camp as a tryout player on Sunday. While at Maryland, Melendez played in 39 games and totaled 61 catches for 891 yards and four touchdowns.

Brown, (6-1, 210 pounds) came out of Michigan State in 2006 and was signed as an undrafted rookie free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs. He was released prior to the start of the season.

He appeared in 42 games with 26 starts at Michigan State and caught a total of 88 passes for 1,329 yards and six touchdowns as a Spartan.

In addition, the Redskins announce today they have placed WR Steven Harris on injured reserve.
