Redskins Sign DB Omar Stoutmire

The Washington Redskins announced March 21 that they have signed free agent safety Omar Stoutmire.

Stoutmire, who is 5-11 and 205 pounds, played on defense and special teams in 12 games with the Redskins in 2005 including both postseason contests that year.

He played the 2006 season in New Orleans. He played in 13 games with nine starts for the Saints last season and recorded 56 total tackles, two interceptions and five passes defensed.

Stoutmire is a 10-year NFL veteran who was originally selected in the seventh round of the 1997 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys out of Fresno State. He spent two seasons with the Cowboys before joining the New York Jets for one season in 1999.

Stoutmire then went on to play five seasons with the New York Giants before joining Washington for the 2005 season.

For his career, Stoutmire has played in 133 games and recorded 418 total tackles and seven interceptions. His best game with the Redskins during the 2005 season came in the team's playoff victory in Tampa Bay where he recorded four tackles, one sack, and one pass defensed.

Stoutmire was an all-Western Athletic Conference choice as a senior at Fresno State. He set a school and conference record his junior season for total tackles with 198 stops on the season.
