Redskins Sign Four to Roster

The Redskins re-signed defensive lineman Melvin Williams to the roster and also promoted three players from the practice squad.

Williams was initially signed by the Redskins last week but was released prior to Sunday's season finale against Minnesota. The 6-2 and 269 pounder was a fifth-round (155th overall) selection by the New Orleans Saints in the 2003 NFL Draft. He also had brief stints with San Francisco and Miami after being waived by the Saints in October 2004.

In Williams' rookie season in 2003, he appeared in 15 games with two starts and recorded 15 tackles (12 solo), one pass deflection and a fumble recovery. A graduate of Kansas State, Williams finished his college career with 70 tackles (40 solo), two forced fumbles, eight pass deflections and 13.5 sacks.

With the Redskins' season over, the players on the eight-member practice squad were either signed to the roster or released.

Signed from the practice squad on Monday were defensive lineman Nic Clemons and cornerbacks James Bethea and Korey Banks.

Wide receiver Gari Scott, center Ben Nowland, linebacker Maurice Jones and offensive lineman Pita Elisara have not been signed to the roster. It's possible that they will be signed later this week, team officials said.
