Redskins Sign Tyson Smith, Place Alexander On IR

The Washington Redskins announced Dec. 24 that they have signed linebacker Tyson Smith and placed defensive tackle Lorenzo Alexander on Injured Reserve. Smith will wear jersey No. 97.

The 6-foot-2, 250-pound Smith has spent parts of the last two seasons on the practice squads of the Broncos, Dolphins, Redskins, 49ers and Giants. He also went to training camp with the Cowboys (2008) and Ravens (2005) and played for the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe in 2006.

Smith was a four-year starter at defensive end for Iowa State and earned All-Big XII Honorable Mention as a senior. He became the only Iowa State football player ever to appear in four bowl games.

The West Des Moines, Iowa native was born Oct. 9, 1981.

Alexander appeared in 15 games in a reserve role on defense and special teams. He injured his hamstring in last Sunday's game at Philadelphia. He accumulated 26 tackles, two sacks and two passes defended in 2008.
