Redskins Sign Veteran DB Stoutmire

The Redskins have signed veteran safety Omar Stoutmire, the team announced on Friday. Stoutmire, who has played in his share of NFC East battles, brings depth and experience to the secondary unit.

Stoutmire has played in 109 games with 51 starts during his eight year career in the NFL. He has recorded 357 tackles (241 solo), five interceptions and six forced fumbles.

Stoutmire played for the New York Giants for the last five seasons. The 5-11, 205 pounder was placed on injured reserve with a torn ACL in the 2004 season opener for the Giants.

During his time in New York, Stoutmire compiled 211 tackles (142 solo) one interception and three forced fumbles.

Stoutmire began his NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys as a seventh round (224th overall) selection in the 1997 NFL Draft. He had a strong rookie campaign with Dallas (1997) playing in all 16 games with two starts recording 76 tackles, one forced fumble and two interceptions.

Stoutmire played for the Cowboys for two seasons, then played one season with the New York Jets.

Stoutmire played safety at Fresno State from 1993-1996. He was named All-Western Athletic Conference as a senior after tallying 87 tackles. During his junior campaign he established a school and conference record for tackles in a season with 198, averaging 16.5 tackles per-game.

Stoutmire, 31, is a native of Long Beach, Calif. He was a Super Prep All-America and earned all-city honors at Poly High School in Long Beach.
