The Redskins and first-round draft pick Trent Williams are "very close" on a contract, head coach Mike Shanahan said.

Williams was not in attendance on the first day of training camp as negotiations continued.

Williams is one of more than a dozen first-round draft picks still unsigned as camps around the league got underway.

"Hopefully it gets done in the near future," Shanahan said. "We're very fair, so hopefully he'll be in on [Friday]."

Asked if he was concerned if Williams, projected to be the starting left tackle, would miss significant time, Shanahan replied: "No. We've dealt with these signings for a lot of years and I'll be surprised if he's not in here quickly in the near future."

He added: "We'll just have to wait and see, but let's address that in a couple of days if it's still a question."

Following the Redskins' last mini-camp in June, Williams told reporters that he hoped to be at training camp on time.

He said he did not anticipate a lengthy training camp holdout.

"Obviously I want to be here," Williams said. "They have me working with the first group, so I really can't afford to miss any practice time."

With Williams absent, second-year offensive tackle Will Robinson worked at left tackle with the first team.
