Reggie Diggs Hopes He'll Be Able To Stay Local With The Redskins

Reggie Diggs had just swallowed some the disappointment of not hearing his named called by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, when his phone started buzzing.

It was his agent, who had some good news. The Redskins agreed to sign him to an undrafted free agent contract. Diggs walked back into his living room with his entire family still figuring out a way to console Diggs when he spread the good news.

"It was just an explosion of excitement. I can't even put it into words," said Diane Parker, Diggs' mother via Wavy.com.

Diggs spent four years at the University of Richmond after breaking out as a big receiver from small 1A Surry County High School, just south of Richmond, Va.

He got his first chance to shine during his junior year, when he started every game and earned second-team All-Colonial Athletic Association honors with 85 catches for 1,157 yards and seven touchdowns. The next year, he was named a team captain and led the Spiders to a CAA co-championship as a senior.

"It was a big accomplishment for me to get a scholarship at the University of Richmond, coming from a smaller school in a small area," said Diggs. "Not a lot of people get a chance to do things like that where I'm from."

At 6-foot-4, 200 pounds, Diggs should be able to use his height and jumping ability as a valuable advantage, something he'll need to prove on a team that already has a wealth of strong receiving options, especially with the addition of first-rounder Josh Doctson.

And, if he can, he'll be able to head to training camp in front of his family and college friends.

"I know what I'm getting myself into when I pursued the NFL," Diggs said. "It's a great opportunity to learn and also compete."
