If you haven't heard the latest pop culture news, the longtime sci-fi hit television show "The X-Files" is returning to FOX, with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson returning to their respective roles as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.
The six episode continuation will shoot this summer and air at some point next season.
Did you know the Redskins have occasionally been mentioned throughout the series?
The main reason is because Duchovny's character Mulder, an FBI Agent living in the D.C. metro area, is a Redskins fan, as noted in an extensive biography of the show.
This manifests itself in two episodes early in the show's nine-season run, which ended in 2002.
The first belongs in the episode “Conduit,” in which Mulder promises an FBI cryptographer tickets to a Redskins game as compensation for attempting to decipher a binary string. You can see this scene in the video below by skipping to 12:38.
The second time Mulder refers to the Redskins is during Season 2.
Both Mulder and Scully travel to Minneapolis, where, during one scene, the broadcast for a Redskin-Vikings game can be heard. Wide receiver Cris Carter's name is announced over the television, an Easter egg for viewers, who know the show's creator Chris Carter.
Previously, Mulder had used the game as an opportunity to ask Scully on a date.
"Vikings vs. Redskins. Two tickets on the 40-yard line at the Metrodome. You and me," he tells her.
We'll just have to wait and see if Mulder mentions the Redskins once "The X-Files" returns to the small screen.
