Report: Redskins Acquire Safety Dashon Goldson

NFL.com's Albert Breer reports the Redskins on Friday acquired two-time Pro Bowl safety Dashon Goldson in a trade with the Buccaneers.

The safety position for the Washington Redskins continues its offseason overhaul.

The Redskins on Friday acquired veteran safety Dashon Goldson in a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to NFL.com’s Albert Breer. The deal is yet to be made official by both clubs, and terms of the deal are undisclosed.

Goldson, 30, is a two-time Pro Bowl selection (2011, 2012), and in 2012 was named a first-team All-Pro with the San Francisco 49ers, when he recorded 69 tackles, 11 passes defensed, three interceptions, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.

In eight career seasons – six with the 49ers and the last two with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Goldson has recorded 499 tackles with three sacks, 43 passes defensed, 15 interceptions, six forced fumbles and one defensive touchdown.

Goldson was a fourth-round (126th-overall) pick of the 49ers out of Washington in the 2007 NFL Draft. While at Washington from 2004 to 2006, he recorded 194 tackles, 22 passes defensed, seven tackles for loss, four interceptions, four fumble recoveries and forced a fumble, while also scoring a touchdown for the Huskies.

A Harbor City, Calif., native, Goldson is very familiar with first-year Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan, who was Vice President of Player Personnel and General Manager of the 49ers from 2005 to 2009.

Goldson's acquisition adds another veteran presence to the safety position for the Redskins, which was in need of an overhaul this offseason after the loss of both its starters in Ryan Clark (retirement) and Brandon Meriweather (unrestricted free agent).

The Redskins on March 16 signed free agent safety Jeron Johnson, who spent the previous four seasons – and won a Super Bowl title – with the Seattle Seahawks, learning behind Pro Bowlers Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas.

Counting Goldson, the Redskins now have seven safeties on their active roster, including Da'Mon Cromartie-Smith, Akeem Davis, Duke Ihenacho, Trenton Robinson and Phillip Thomas.
