Rogers Suffers Knee Injury

Cornerback Carlos Rogers suffered what was called a significant knee ligament injury in the first quarter of Sunday's game against the New England Patriots.

The injury was to Rogers' MCL in his right knee. It's believed he also may have injured his ACL in the knee, so he will undergo further tests on Monday.

Rogers suffered the knee injury after he was blocked on a short pass from Patriots quarterback Tom Brady to running back Kevin Faulk. He gingerly walked off the field with help from two athletic trainers.

Rogers had entered the game with a sprained left knee that limited him in practice last week. He was listed as probable entering the game.

As a result of Rogers' injury, the Redskins' defense found itself in a tight spot against the potent Patriots offense.

At pre-game, Fred Smoot was deactivated due to a hamstring injury. It's the third game this season that Smoot has missed due to an injured hamstring.

Rogers was replaced by first-year player Leigh Torrence in the secondary. Eight-year veteran David Macklin also saw action at cornerback.

Pierson Prioleau saw plenty of action in coverage as well. He started the game when the Redskins opened with an extra defensive back.

Rogers' status will be updated on Monday, team officials said.

-- CARTWRIGHT AMONG INACTIVES

As expected, kick returner Rock Cartwright was deactivated for Sunday's game against the New England Patriots.

Cartwright has been slowed by a quad injury that he suffered in last week's game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Ladell Betts and James Thrash returned kickoffs in place of Cartwright.

Cartwright's absence was also felt on punt and kick coverage units. Entering the Patriots game, he was second on the team in special tames tackles with 16;

The Redskins' complete list of inactive players was as follows: Fred Smoot, Cartwright, defensive tackle Ryan Boschetti, offensive linemen Stephon Heyer, Rick DeMulling and Randy Thomas and wide receiver Reche Caldwell.

-- SEYMOUR BACK FOR PATRIOTS

The Patriots' defense looks even stouter now that the team has activated defensive end Richard Seymour from the physically unable to perform list.

Seymour saw action in the Redskins-Patriots game.

Seymour, 6-3 and 310 pounds, is a five-time Pro Bowler and a dominant force for the Patriots' defensive line. He has 29.5 career sacks in the regular season and 4.5 sacks in the postseason.

Seymour was sidelined the first seven games of the season as he rehabbed from off-season knee surgery.

On the Patriots official team web site, Seymour was listed as the first-string at right defensive end on the depth chart at pre-game, replacing six-year vet Jarvis Green.

The Patriots' inactive list included tight end Benjamin Watson, who has an ankle injury. Kyle Brady, the 13-year veteran, started in his place.

-- NICKED UP

Running back Clinton Portis suffered a bruised hand during Sunday's game against the Patriots. He was sidelined for several plays in the first half, but he returned to play the rest of the game.

Also, linebacker Rocky McIntosh had a shoulder stinger, linebacker H.B. Blades suffered a sprained knee and safety Vernon Fox had a bruised hip.

The team will update the status of injured players on Monday.
